On a recent nature study field trip we came upon these Juvenile Lubber Grasshoppers. They were everywhere! We had to be careful as we were walking because the ground was covered with them!
The kids had fun catching them and comparing their sizes and we also had an opportunity to observe them a bit more on the trunks of neighboring trees.
We may have to return in a few weeks to see them when they reach maturity. In maturity, Lubber grasshoppers are large, extremely colorful, and usually bear short wings.

Now that is a real world learning experience, very neat! What lucky kids you have.
