Monarch caterpillar & butterfly study: Part 1

Tuesday, September 1, 2009

As part of our nature study we are studying the Monarch caterpillar and butterfly. In the past we've used a butterfly kit with Painted Lady caterpillars. This time however, we are studying the Monarch butterfly----from our own yard!

In a few more days we are going to take a few caterpillars off the Milkweed bush and put them in a tank inside so that we can watch their metamorphosis. We are very excited about this since their chrysalis is clear!

We are also using a few online resources to aid us in this study.

Explore Butterflies is a simple but informative site that helps educate students about butterflies, their habit, how to conduct field observations and how our climate and environmental changes affect butterflies.

Oh my son would love that. I wish we had creatures like that here in our backyard. We don't ever see too many interesting little creatures. I think I'll have to order a butterfly kit at some point. :)
